At Jenkins-White, We've Got Talent!

**Yes, I CAN! **

Jenkins-White students affirm that they CAN do anything as you will see and hear in this beautiful rendition of the song, "Yes, You Can" by Donnie McClurkin.  This was performed during An Evening with the Arts, April 24, 2012.  The event served as a reminder of the importance of the arts on student achievement and showcased our students in the areas of the visual and performing arts, Spanish and Physical Health.

Pennies for Patients

Wow!  Congratulations to Ms. Chapman and all those who worked with her on the (highly successful) Pennies for Patients campaign.  All of 3rd grade is eligible for pennants and Mrs. Harmon's class won a pasta party for the largest class collection - $195.78.  You have shown that you know how to help others and YOU DID IT!

Storyland Theatre

We offer our Governing Board member, Mrs. Barbara Feldman, a huge thank you for facilitating our visits to the Storyland Theatre.  Our students have enjoyed their field trips to see a variety of Storyland Theatre productions.  To extend student learning, Jenkins-White received a special treat - Mrs. Feldman visited classes to talk about the story and the production.  What a wonderful opportunity for our school community!

Congratulations!

WE MADE AYP!!!
CONGRATULATIONS to everyone at Jenkins-White! YOU ALL worked very hard and it paid off.  Way to go!

Dr. Bonnie Harris, Teacher of the Year

We are proud to say that Dr. Bonnie Harris, Music Teacher, is the Jenkins-White Teacher of the Year for 2011-12.  Dr. Harris began taking music lessons at the age of 9 and her favorite musical instrument is the piano.  She graduated from Laney High School - at the age of 15!  She graduated from Wesleyan College and is married and has 2 adult children.  She has been working for the Richmond County School System for the last 6 years and currently teaches strings and orchestra to elementary and middle school students.  Dr. Harris has been an inspiration to many of our students and took our chorus to award-winning heights.

Governing Board News

When Jenkins-White's charter was renewed on July 1, an important part of the charter became governance by a governing board.  Our governing board is meeting monthly and even had a Meet 'n Greet with the local board, attended a Charter School Conference and held a retreat for this dedicated group.  Attached are the minutes from their most recent meeting for you to read so that you can be a part of what's happening with our charter.  If you would like to see the minutes from other meetings, please contact Mrs. Sana Reedy at Jenkins-White.

The next Governing Board meeting will be on Thursday, April 12, 2012 at 5:15 in Room 111.

Jenkins-White Students Pledge to Be Drug Free

During Red Ribbon Week, many activities occurred to teach students how drugs could be dangerous and to stay away from them.  Police officers came for our assembly and talked more about these issues.  This short movie clip shows our students pledging to live drug free.

Parents Meet for Coffee Club

Jenkins-White is fortunate to have Mrs. Dianne Murphy as our Parent Facilitator.  Mrs. Murphy works hard to build relationships with parents in an effort to improve the home-school connection.  She coordinates a variety of programs like the Coffee Club and Volunteer Training Programs.  All parents should come visit the Parenting Center to explore the resources Mrs. Murphy has available to you.

Principal's Book of the Month

Each month Mrs. Norris shares a book with all of Jenkins-White by reading it on our closed circuit TV show.   Then all of the classes participate in a variety of activities that extend their understanding of the book.

The Principal's Book of the Month for May is:  We All have a Heritage by Sandy Lynn Holman.  From Perma-Bound Libraries:  An illustrated story of children from diverse backgrounds who learn and celebrate the fact that we all have a heritage and that we have a lot in common.

Our students will discuss the meaning of this book and how it relates to their lives.  This is just one example of how books can help us in our own relationships.

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL, MRS. NORRIS

Welcome to Jenkins-White Elementary Charter School, where our motto is: Conceive it, believe it, achieve it! Our mission is to develop a community of active, reflective and creative learners in an environment enriched by an integrated curriculum, supported by encouragement and assistance, celebrating lifelong learning and respect for others. I am very excited and proud to have the opportunity to work with our staff, students, parents, and the Jenkins-White community again this year.

This is a year of celebrations at Jenkins-White Elementary Charter School!

First of all, Jenkins-White made AYP!

Our dedicated staff has clearly established rituals and routines in the classrooms. Discipline referrals have decreased. Student achievement has increased. There is greater communication between home and school. Our charter was approved for five more years. We have an active Governing Board, which meets monthly. There is a greater emphasis on reading, writing, and speaking.  This year, all students will participate in service learning (a method of teaching through which students apply their academic skills and knowledge to address real-life needs in their own communities) through an integrated curriculum.

Thanks to our parents, staff and community partners for all that you are doing at Jenkins-White Elementary Charter School.  Because of YOU, our students are college bound and destined for greatness!

Janie R. Norris

Principal

Greetings from Our Assistant Principal

This school year has flown by, because of much fun learning. At the beginning of the year we found out we made AYP, now we anxiously anticipate hearing we made it again. Keep your fingers and your toes crossed! I believe in our students, teachers, and parents!
I have enjoyed our Principal’s Books of the Month, Moving Math, Wednesday Professional Learning, P.A.W.S. Celebrations, Charter School Governing Board activities, Storyland Theatre, Classroom Visits, and Service Learning Projects. Most of all, I have enjoyed conversing with the students. Student vocabulary has greatly improved at Jenkins-White Elementary Charter School. Our teachers have set high academic expectations for our students this school year, and our students have risen to the occasion. I am proud to be your Assistant Principal.
Let me know if there is anything I can do to help you or yours.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Fry
